Sexual Discrimination

Did you know that a woman can change her surname to be that of her new husband without having to pay anything, or fill out new forms.

HOWEVER

the husband is not allowed to change his surname to that of his new wife. he must pay $127 for the privilage.

This is in NSW and TAS... Victoria is unsure. They say you can on their website, but then state that VicRoads may need a formal name change (they do not specify which spouse may need to do it formally). Not sure about other states.

There is no formal LAW that states this. It is purely based on Marriage Custom.

I'm confused...if there's no law, then why and who do you have to pay?

Basically the tasmanian crew are passing the buck. I have not started with the NSW group 'cause I am not getting married in NSW...

The thing is... because it is not law, each individual company can make up their own policies - which means each individual group is leaving themselves open for a discrimination case. BDM just says "not my problem" one minute the Tassie group says "Sure, you can change your name but the Road Authority might need you to do it by deedpoll"

In victoria they cover their arses by saying anyone can change their name when married, but any company may ask any one (male or female) to change their name legally. I want to call and ask if it is only women.

I have a small feeling it is a nationwide accepted custom that has never been contested...

We'll it's going to be now ;)

Another lady on the wedding forum is wanting to do this right now. we have not thought about it ourselves... anyways, so there are going to be letters, petitions, mps harrassed...

Bring on the Bridezillas!
